Elizabeth de Smaele

Elizabeth de Smaele

The Netherlands has been my home since 1996. I relocated from Canada as Elizabeth Hyatt, a single woman with a big heart for God and people. The ties to my home country have stayed strong through the years, not only with family and friends, but also with valuable colleagues in my field of spiritual direction. In 2008 I completed a Master’s degree in theological studies (MDiv) with a major in spiritual formation through Tyndale Seminary in Toronto.

A practicum in spiritual direction launched my private practice in 2007. In November 2009 I was certified in my field and granted the title Certified Spiritual Director (CSD) and since July 2012 I've also been certified by Gcoach.

Deeper Devotion's vision is to come alongside as you engage deeply with God in ways appropriate to the unique person you are. I give priority to becoming rooted in God's love and grace which overflows into a vital prayer life and growth toward Christlikeness.

My journey involved diverse global experience before I settled in The Netherlands. My first Masters degree was in Piano Performance an Pedagogy, and my experience as an educator and musician influence my work current work as I inspire toward living in worshipful devotion. My work as a performer and student worker, in addition to years of training leaders of European churches, has enriched my work with people from around the world.

Church Life

A longtime leader within Crossroads International Church of Amsterdam, I have given leadership to ministries of worship, creative arts, women and faith formation. As a part of the Crossroads teaching team I participate in planning our Sunday teaching themes and, since the arrival of our new teaching pastor in February 2012, preach but occasionally. I am currently developing an introductory course in contemplative spirituality which will run for the first time in Fall 2012.

Personal Life

I've been joyfully married to Gérard de Smaele since 1998. We enjoy active vacations out in nature. Our favourite destinations are Canada and Sweden, but over the past couple of years we've added the north coast of France and the Highlands of Scotland to our travel portfolios. My greatest source of joy is sharing heart-to-heart with people and, above all, with God. Read my spiritual story.

Quote of the Week
"Somebody was telling me this week that nobody can make a violin speak the last depths of human longing until that soul has been made tender by some great anguish. I do not say it is the only way to the heart of God..."
