Letting go of the good for what is better
by Jaap Cok
‘What is good can become the enemy of the better’, writes Oswald Chambers in his famous devotional book, My Utmost for His Highest. I have experienced this strongly during the past year.
My name is Jacob. Just like the biblical Jacob, I am the younger brother of a twin. Jacob means ‘grasper’ Jacob grasped onto the heel of his brother Esau during their birth. His name also means ‘Deceiver’ because he thought that he should give God a helping hand. As an adult Jacob fought with God and the angel let Jacob win. During this wrestling match his hip was thrown out of joint and he walked with a limp for the rest of his life, a constant reminder of his encounter with God that night. God gave him a new name, ‘Israel’ which would be a testimony that God reigns. Jacob then was ready to be led by God, which is His desire for all people, through his Spirit.
God has given every person a free will with which he can choose to let go. Faith and love are at work whenever we choose to let go, to surrender.
Last year Elizabeth spoke in Crossroads on sexuality, and her sermon touched me deeply. She taught that God always has the best in mind for everyone, even while this may involve choosing surrender and obedience. Later I understood that obedience to God is ultimate love.
I told Elizabeth my story about wanting to bring my relationship into obedience to God. I had strayed away from Him and He had been speaking to me about this through some friends of mine. Could I let go? Also of something which was apparently beautiful or good? This process was not easy this past year, but I chose for it. Elizabeth prayed for me and I became confirmed in this path of my choice.
Last February I purchased a sculpture by my friend Karl Emfeld. This piece of art expresses perfectly my choice to let go. Once I released my hands and my will, God could fill my hands with grace. My hands became once again hands of worship.
Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. He spoke truth to her with mercy, and when she understood what He had revealed, she told everyone in her town that she had found the Messiah, the Saviour of the world!
God searches for those who will worship HIm in spirit and in truth. We may be filled with Him as we give back what we have received and, in worshiping Him, fulfil our reason for being. This gives God great pleasure!
