Getaway with God Weekends
breathe deeply, rest, and connect with God

feet up

Solitude and silence are essential practices for living a spiritual life. But they are rarely easy to come by. A Getaway with God weekend offers an opportunity to remove ourselves from the demands and distractions of daily life for the valuable purpose of 'wasting time' with God. In a Getaway we withdraw into a setting that's conducive to seeking God--and ourselves--in silence.

I wonder how the idea of spending a weekend, in silence, in God's presence sounds to you. It might seem more delightful than a cold drink on a hot summer's day. Or perhaps it seems confronting or even scary, prompting thoughts like, "Do I even dare to spend extended hours alone with God? What will I do with myself in the silence? What might I hear? Or will I hear anything?" Don't let these things deter you for...

A Getaway with God includes some training, guided prayer times each morning and evening, a limited amount interaction with other participants, and the opportunity to receive spiritual guidance or prayer. All this in a lovely grace-filled setting with sufficient prompts and input to help you to get the most out of your time.

Getaway Weekend

Good reasons to participate

  • You know the value of taking a personal retreat but rarely get around to it. Planning it alongside others will help you to actually do it.
  • You think it's a good idea to get away with God but you don't know how to begin.
  • You are seeking God's wisdom and know that an extended time of prayer will be valuable to you.
  • You want to grow in your ability to hear from God.
  • You simply long for the intimacy of sharing time in God's presence.
  • You're in need of an oasis of rest and restoration for body and soul.

Especially for women

"Without solitude it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life… We do not take the spiritual life seriously if we do not set aside some time to be with God and listen to him." Henri Nouwen (Making All Things New)

"When we make room for silence we make room for ourselves. Silence invites the unknown, the untamed, the wild, the shy, the unfathomable-that which rarely has a chance to surface within us." Gunilla Norris (Sharing Silence)

A Getaway with God is a women's retreat in a peaceful getaway place: a klooster in the rolling countryside of Limburg or a retreat centre in the more centrally located Gelderland. You will experience a spacious 48 hours, a gift to yourself of rest and restoration, and an opportunity to draw close to God and to listen to what he has to say to you. Ank Koopmans-Oosting or Joke Leijen join me, Elizabeth de Smaele, as your hosts and guides for this weekend.

What about the men? Ernst Haagsman (Navigators) has led stilteweekends for men since 1996. Skilled and experienced, we recommend Dutch speaking men to the weekends led by Ernst.

Feedback from participants

"The way that you and Ank offer the retreat is so kind and with care and with Gods love. It was a life changing experience and a very big gift to me." Anel

"Was an awesome experience! If you are in need of some quiet time with yourself and God, looking for some tools and insights to help you to do so, this weekend is a don't-miss-it opportunity. Plus the extra that comes with it, that for a change you are being cared for. It is food for the body and especially the soul." Jackie

"I remember so clearly the weekend last December. The encouragement I received there is still a daily source of energy. The Lord is so much more than our circumstances. To walk in His light is such a privilege." Leny

"It's surprising what God does when you take time for stillness. Without an agenda for the weekend, God used my openness to meet with Him. The quieter I become, the louder He sounds." Cathelijne

"I enjoyed the various avenues of creativity. We could paint, draw and use our hands in various ways. There was lots of freedom and my ceativitity was stimulated. I've pasted the photo that I chose the first evening on my agenda as a daily reminder of sharing a meal with God – my desire at the beginning of the weekend." Elise
